I love autumn/winter fashion – the opportunity to wrap yourself in luxurious fabrics, add layers and accessorise with hats and scarfs. This season we are seeing an array of scrumptious deep colours, including burgundy, mustard and navy, as well as texture with furs and embroidered prints. In this issue you will find our runway report that takes a look at all the international fashion weeks; New York, London, Milan and Paris, and highlights our top trends from the four great cities. I was lucky enough a have one-on-one interview with Emilia Wickstead during iD Dunedin Fashion Week. The Duchess of Cambridge’s favourite designer gives us her advice on how to dress in a chic, effortless way. We also step back into the past to look at some of the world’s most renowned fashion icons and which contemporary celebrities can match their style and glamour. Kaleidoscope Prints The seventies are alive again – or at least they were at Paris Fashion Week, with designers choosing a mixture of swirling prints, florals, metallics and paisleys. Combined with a variety of colourways, these garments created a kaleidoscope of colours and patterns. Givenchy stood out the most with its psychedelic collection. When it comes to mixing colours and prints this autumn, it would appear the advice from the fashion greats is: ‘forget the rules’. Embrace your psychedelic side and have fun this season.
Ruffles Ruffles have been reinvented this season. Gone are the girly frills and in their place are more structured, larger ruffles that create a powerful hemline. Think tiers of chiffon floating down.
Looking for fashion inspiration? British model David Gandy is the man to watch. His style is polished, preppy, effortlessly masculine and very British, gaining the attention of international media that now watch his every move. The marathon is over, four cities in one month New York, London, Milan and Paris Fashion Week autumn/winter fashion weeks have enthralled us with an array of style and glamour. We take a look at the top trends from the runway.
London

London was preparing for a cold winter with lots of lush furs, knits and beautiful wintry colours. Amanda Wakeley’s soft caramel furs received rave reviews, as did Burberry’s military jackets. Kiwi-born Emilia Wickstead’s collection had anklelength dresses named the new sexy length.

New York The Big Apple was abuzz with every fashionista in town. Some of the top trends included romantic plaits with lush furs à la Rachel Zoe. Puma’s black lips were the talk of the town and Marc Jacobs’ almost Elizabethan use of furs, leather and deep forest colours made for a must-see show.

New Zealand designer Emilia Wickstead – famous for dressing the Duchess of Cambridge – socialises in high society London circles, is a friend to the stars, and exhibits a style that is effortlessly chic, but with a twist. Editor Victoria Tait catches up with the fashionista while she is in her home country, to discuss her new collection, and the secret to looking sexy whilst still covering up.
Can you tell me a little bit about what you are wearing?
I love to collect pieces from every collection that I’m crazy about – this is a piece from my autumn/winter collection, two seasons ago. It’s our own geometric print made of wool – almost feels like a blanket, which is perfect for a cold day.
What is your inspiration behind your own personal style?
I find my own style is very organic and natural. I love the idea of being effortlessly chic, and the feeling of throwing on a red lippy and minimal makeup. I wear cuts that work for a woman’s body, so they don’t need to be tight fitting. I also love longer-length dresses and a sleeve.
Do you use yourself as a muse when designing?
I am always designing with myself in mind, that comes very naturally, but I am also designing for all women. I like to think there is a little bit of everything for everyone. I feel very comfortable in my clothes.
Can you give us some tips on how to achieve a sexy, yet elegant, look?
Sexy can be thinking outside the box, it doesn’t have to be a low V-neck or be short. What I love is that unique sophistication and creating a twist to
a garment. A high front with an open back and sleeve, yet showing off the right curves, is sexy. I used to do every fitting in my business for a very long time, and this gave me the understanding of what women feel comfortable in. If you are in your own skin then that is sexy. My spring/summer 2016 range has dresses with balloon sleeves and small cut-outs on the stomach, which adds a little bit of twist. It’s about showing a little and not too much.
In February you showed your new autumn/winter collection at London Fashion Week, what can we expect?
It is a little darker and more moody than my spring/summer collection. The colour palette was inspired by Erwin Blumenfeld – he was an incredibly influential photographer. It was his series called ‘Fantasies’ where he photographed the aristocracy during the sixties in London. I’ve picked up colours and tones from this and used them in the collection. I played a lot with jersey; there is nothing easier or more comfortable than a jersey dress. I also have used a lot of denim, which was a harsh streetstyle way to show Emilia Wickstead silhouettes. I’ve already been wearing one of the dresses in denim – it feels very cool. Each season I try to introduce something new and fresh, it’s the biggest challenge as a designer.

How To CHeCk If Your SuIT fITS n
It’s hard to make a great suit look good if it doesn’t fit properly. Follow our top tips to ensure you get the right fit and look polished this autumn. •
Ensure the shoulder pads end with your shoulders.
•
The chest and lapels of the suit should contour the shape of your chest, but should not be too tight or too loose. The lapels should not bulge, they should lie flat on the chest.
•
A jacket is too tight if an “X” is created around a fastened top button.
•
Check where your buttons are sitting. The top button of a two-button suit should not fall below your navel – note that this is the middle button of a three-button suit.
•
The sleeves should hang straight from the shoulder to the wrist. To test this, see if it falls where the base of your thumb meets your wrist.
•
Between a quarter and a half inch of shirt cuff should be visible.
•
The overall look of your trousers should be trim but not tight. Keep in mind that the pockets and the front of the pants should lay flat.

WHILE Emma’s at Oxford is predominantly a bookstore, it’s also your destination for an ever-growing and changing range of merino garments under the Merinomink and Untouched World labels. Owner Emma Gillard left the ‘big smoke’ of Auckland to open her store in June 2007. What started with books and gifts has continued to evolve, with Merinomink accessories quickly becoming one of the star attractions. About six year ago, merino gloves, scarves and wraps were added to shelves and their popularity has led to the extensive collection on offer today. “The products are simply the best quality. The styles don’t date, the garments don’t pill; they are investment pieces you will wear for years,” says Emma. “We all own, wear and just love them.” And so does everyone else: “Customers are coming back each season to see what’s new and indulge in a new piece – or three – or buy as gifts.”
Booklovers will love the large, diverse and highly recommended range of literature available in this picturesque country setting. “People regularly say they haven’t seen an offering such as ours in a long time,” says Emma proudly. Emma’s at Oxford is currently located in a beautiful art-deco building in Oxford’s Main Street, however, come the end of May, you’ll find them but a few doors down while the building undergoes earthquake strengthening and expansion. “I’m really looking forward to the end of the year and being back in a bigger and better building and really being able to showcase what we have on offer,” says Emma. A place to find warm, stylish accessories and something satisfying to read sounds simply idyllic.
Ponchos are another fashion accessory for which Emma’s has become known. “We’re known as the Poncho Queens by the sales team at Merinomink!” Emma says with a laugh. “In fact, our best-selling colour is a rich navy blue called Zephyr and we were told we were the third biggest seller in Australasia of that particular line last year.” Not bad going for an independent bookstore in a country town.

The first step is deciding where to put your part. Centre or side-parted, each creates an elegant and polished look. Once you’ve decided on a part, smooth out your hair with straighteners.
Lips Line the lips prior to applying lipstick to prevent bleeding or feathering.
Add some shine serum. Be careful to focus the serum from the mid-lengths to the ends, as you don’t want greasy roots.
Fill in lips with your oxblood lip colour (we love MAC lipstick in Diva). Use a lip brush to clean up the area around the lips with a concealer.
Use a clear elastic or hairband that matches the colour of your hair. Carefully gather hair into a low ponytail. Place the pony at the nape of your neck and secure it with the elastic. When it comes to eating habits and making improvements to our health in general, trying to change absolutely everything about our lifestyle overnight very rarely works. We often think: “If I can’t eat/do things perfectly, I shouldn’t bother at all.” As a recovering perfectionist, I totally get that. However, this clearly doesn’t support success. It just keeps us stuck right where we are, on the dieting rollercoaster, never seeing results for the long term. I always say to my clients, “over time not overnight”. We want to do things gradually, because that’s what results in permanent change. Why weight loss and many health programmes often don’t work is because we go from eating whatever we want, to restricting everything. So, instead of drastically restricting everything, use my three-step tool – add, modify and delete. Pick one thing you want to add Pick one thing you want to modify Pick one thing you want to delete
FOR ExAMPLE Add: A morning meditation to centre you for the day. Modify: Refined sugar intake. Alcohol is a huge source of sugar – so instead of drinking during the week, stick to a few just on the weekends. Delete: Eating after 8pm. Commit to the add, modify, delete plan for 30 days. Once that all becomes a habit – start a new add, modify, delete plan. When you do steps incrementally like that, it creates new habits. You won’t feel overwhelmed and it feels really manageable. Like magic, it all starts to become a lifestyle that you LOVE and that are you motivated to sustain.
